Belated Thoughts on V-Day

I found this hilarious article on Valentine’s Day while brousing the net. I loved it for many reasons, mainly because it somewhat reflects my own attitude toward the so-called holiday. Nathan is working on converting me and I think I am becoming a believer, but if you would have told me a couple of years ago that I would love flowers, chocolate, and sappy movies for February 14th I would have told you you were crazy.

I never thought my attitude would change because:

  • I did not grow up celebrating Valentine’s Day. I only learned of it in the 11th grade, which was a little too late. I was one of those invisible girls who didn’t get but one little Valentine note from a guy I knew from church (I suspect he felt sorry for me).
  • I don’t want to do whatever everyone else is doing. Why should I celebrate my love for my husband in a standardly prescribed way? Or even in an unprescribed way, but why that day? ‘Cause everybody’s doin’ it?
  • Loving someone is not about one day for me. It’s about so much more and deluting it to flowers, candy, movies, and a meal at an overcrowded chow-down is somehow very unromantical to me.

My ways are slowly changing though. Nathan loves Valentine’s Day and I love Nathan. And, as you know, if A is like B, and B is like C, then A is like C. There goes my logic!!!
