Today was a very important day for us. We went in for a second trimester ultrasound to check for malformations and also to find out baby’s gender. For some reason, the doctor I am seeing makes me drink 32 ounces (0.94 liters) of water and hold it for over an hour before a sonogram. It worked pretty well the first time, but has been a huge failure since.

The second time I was so nauseated, I couldn’t keep anything, so that was a disaster. This time, while I am no longer feeling nauseous, my bladder is operating on a reduced capacity, so I had to use the restroom three times before seeing the doctor. Even then she said my bladder was still too full and asked, “Would you like to use the restroom?” ARE YOU KIDDING? Do you even have to ask?

So, once I emptied my bladder (sorry for these graphic details, it’s my life these days), things went a lot smoother. We got to see baby’s profile, heart, bladder, spine, brain, bones, etc. It was fascinating. It always is. Once the doctor took all the measurements, she asked if we wanted to know what we are having. We said, YES! PLEASE!

She then asked us what we thought we were having and since my regular OB has been telling me it’s a girl, I confidently said, “We think it’s a little girl.” “Actually, it’s a little boy.” I think we were both slightly stunned at that point. We’ve been calling baby a ‘she,’ referring to it by a girl name.

I kept asking the doctor if she was sure it’s a boy and she kept taking pictures of his privates and pointing out that there is no way ‘that thing’ on the screen was a part of female anatomy. Half the pictures we got were zoomed in on baby’s privates with little arrows pointing to them.

Finally, after a few minutes of my asking the doc if she was 100% sure, she said, “Look, if you have a girl, you can bring her back here and I will exchange her for a little boy, ok?” Yes, ma’m.

So now we are back to square one with names and such, but we are both very excited we are having a very healthy baby boy. By the way, he was either picking his nose or chewing his arm off during the sonogram and the doctor had to give my belly a good shaking a couple of times to get him to cooperate. Fun times!

Sounds so much like our experience. I drank all that water got there and they ran behind by 45 minutes. No one told me I could go to the bathroom and start over again and I was so determined to find out what we were having I held as long as possible then finally I couldn’t take it any longer. I was so worried when we went in that they wouldn’t see anything. When we got in there they made me go to the bathroom again because I was still to full. What an awful experience. So worth it though. Take care and as for those stretch marks I am told they fade with time. Mine haven’t yet but Avon sells a cream to reduce the appearance, I am going to try that soon. I will let you know how it works.
