Food for Thought

In my previous post I mentioned briefly that we are fighting a food fight at our house. I want to share more details about this and see if any of you have been there and are willing to give us advice. It goes basically like this: Hudson was born; he did not want to eat; he drove his mother crazy; the end.

No, really. I used to make all of his food when he was younger. I mainly made fruit and vegetable purees and he did fine with those. As he got older, I decided to try stage three organic jar foods. He loved them and it was just so much easier than having to make up a menu for him and cook separately. All was well.

However, now that Hudson is 16 months old and has 16 teeth (and I am tired of having to pack a million jars any time we travel) I am officially switching him to table foods. No more jars. I fix him soups, sweet potatoes, grilled cheese sandwiches, and also give him fruits and veggies. So far, he has pretty much rejected everything. EVERYTHING.

This is so disheartening and disconcerting to me. He now turns up his nose to foods he used to love like avocados and sweet potatoes. I am not sure why this is. My theory is that he is either going through some crazy phase where he’s just not hungry at all or he is rebelling against my decision to discontinue feeding him jar foods.

Either way, I am not fond of this stage at all. I am at my wit’s end because while Hudson puts food in his mouth and even chews it, he spits everything out. I am not sure how he still has any energy because he certainly does not consume anywhere near 1000 calories a day. I guess there really are two possible explanations here:

1. Hudson is rebelling, doesn’t like the new textures and tastes.
2. Something is medically wrong with him.

Bring on your wisdom. I will appreciate any words you can give me.

Ok two thoughts he could have reflux. We had friends who had the same problem put their daughter on medication and slowly things changed. If you are concerned it might be worth a trip to the doctor.

Second, our pediatrtion told us not to judge a toddlers food intake over a day but a week. One day they eat a ton (doesn’t sound like the case) then the next day nothing. Hudson does sound similar to Gavin who at two and a half still isn’t a great eater, still spits food out after taking several bites, why I don’t know but he is growing and developing fine so I don’t worry. It is annoying. Mike has taken to creating bites using chips to distract from other healthier foods.

One more thing they (whoever they are) say that you have to introduce a new food some crazy amount of time like 15 or something before a child will eat it. This is not true of anything containing large amounts of sugar. :)

Good luck! I do feel your pain.

I wish I could help you but my child is currently rejecting pureed foods and therefore isn’t eating solids like he is supposed to at his age…DOH. So I have the same problem only earlier in the process…

Thanks ladies. It appears Hudson has a cold at this time, so I hope that his refusal to eat has something to do with that. For now, I am planning on contunuing to feed him regular table foods until he either starts eating like a human being or I get tired of it and give in to jar foods.
