Running with Dogs

I don’t think even menopausal hot flashes can beat Texas heat. Especially the kind of heat that sneaks up on you when you are trying to remove stubborn stumps from your yard or paint doors. Since we bought our house, we’ve been working non-stop on house improvement projects and this is where Texas heat has been an absolute pain in the ol’ you know what. I suppose we are slowly but surely filling out the stereotypical “home owner” mold: movie theater has been replaced by the Home Depot.
I think I really screwed myself up today though with this heat and all. I decided it was a good day for a run in the morning and then I spent a few hours outdoors warring with the yard. I have a feeling I will be paying for this later.
The most peculiar thing happened on my morning run—as I began to gain speed I heard some heavy panting behind me. I turned my head and out of the corner of my eye I saw a huge bluish-gray dog. No tags, no collar. Not good. I hesitated for a moment because I wasn’t sure if I should keep going and risk losing a limb or slow down to a walk and risk losing a limb.
I am not sure why, but I chose to keep running. The dog caught up with me, got close to me on the right side and just kept running in step for a while, until he decided he was done, crossed the street, and headed toward a pond. Needless to say, I ran in the opposite direction as fast as my body would allow.
In other news—I absolutely love my new job. Thanks to all the well-wishers and friends who prayed me through this time—please know that you are greatly appreciated. My job has many perks, among them watching policemen lead away hand-cuffed high schoolers, enjoying the 100+ member high school band, and hearing all about the best plastic surgeons in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Fun times.
