The Name Game

Call me old-fashioned, but I believe the name you give your child sets the stage for his/her life. Big time. I am very much into exploring historic and linguistic roots of names. I am one of those people who strongly believe that a name’s meaning matters.

Maybe that’s why Nathan and I don’t have a baby yet—we can’t agree on a name (and the fact that he is bi-racial and I am tri-cultural doesn’t help much; whatever name we choose will have to work in at least two languages and reflect three cultures).

And that’s why a recent article I came across made me shudder. This New Zealand couple chose 4Real as a name for their first-born because when they saw their baby on the first ultrasound they realized he is “for real.” Now, that’s sweet, but his parents are not the ones who will have to take that name to school every single day for ten years or so and I have a feeling they are not really considering long-term consequences here.

Another example is a recent contestant on Idol who went into labor during her audition. She subsequently named her son Jamil Labarron Idol McCowan (Jamil Labor On Idol McCowan). My, my. That’s all I have to say about that.
