Three Year Old

Part of my job at the college is returning phone calls. It’s not my favorite part because I usually get people’s names wrong off the answering machine and then it’s a little awkward when I think I am calling Ann, when, in fact, the lady’s name is Amu. How I get Ann out of Amu I am not sure, I suppose I am creative?

Anyway, today I got to return a phone call to a lady whose name I thought I had nailed, but it turned out not to matter in the least. It didn’t matter because her three-year-old answered the phone. The conversation went something like this:

“Hello!!!!!!!” (And here is where I should have known better, but then this post would have never happened, so it all works out in the end).
“Hi, this is Olga Smith, may I speak with (insert name here).”
“Who are you?”
“Olga Smith.”
“But what’s your name?”
“Olga Smith.”
“Huh?”
“Olga Smith.”
“But I think Charlie wanted to talk to you!”
“Can I speak with your mommy?”
“But what’s your name?”
“Olga Smith.”

And, no matter how many times you ask this question, my answer is not going to change. Surprising, I know. I suppose the little one had recently had a lesson on introductions at pre-school? Or maybe this is some kind of cruel and unusual punishment for those who mix up people’s names when returning phone calls?

After about what seemed like an eternity of playing the “but what’s your name” game, I finally connected with the person I was calling. Phew-hehah! And here is my stab at the moral of this story—someone should let three-year-olds in this area know that Olga is an actual, legitimate name. I’ve got a lot of work to do.

Olga I found your site searching for information on AVMs. Doctors are in the process of confirming that I too have an AVM. Your symptoms seem simalar to mine. I would love to know more about your plan. Thank you

Kristin: I am sorry about your diagnosis. I know it takes time for it to sink in and it’s definitely not the news you want to receive from your doctor. Please feel free to email me at any time and I’d be happy to chat with you about this.
